The ideal candidate will have experience in matrix organizations, fast growing companies, and is able to pivot quickly. To be successful in this role, you must be develop relationships at the executive level, be able to push back when needed, and able to succeed in a fast paced environment.


This position will manage a local team comprised of a HR Manager, HR Generalist and HR Associate, along with recruiting. As a member of the HR Team, you will work hands on with leaders in Canada to drive employee understanding and engagement around Avison Young’s culture and strategy. Reporting to the Director, Human Resources (North America), this role will:


  • Provide strategic advice, counsel, and consultative solutions to management on the people-management aspects of their business.
  • Drive consistency in employee experience and engagement, collaborate with the rest of the HR team on North American people initiatives.
  • Identify HR-related needs for Canada with respect to policy, process, and procedures; coordinate with Director of HR, North America and CHRO on recommendations.
  • Provide practical, consistent, and pro-active support, direction and advice to Managing Directors, Operations Managers, managers and employees on complex Human Resource, Employee Relations, and Labour Issues.
  • Spearhead activities in support of company initiatives including but not limited to employee engagement, diversity and inclusion succession planning, talent development, retention strategies and other company initiatives; goals must be aligned with overall corporate goals and objectives and global HR strategy.
  • Provide meaningful guidance and serve as a key contributor on human capital matters associated with M&A activity.
  • Coach and support HR team on employee relations matters including employee concerns, performance, performance improvement plans (PIP), training and development, career progression, retention, recognition, etc.
  • Maintain and expand knowledge and understanding of existing and proposed laws/regulations affecting human resources management. Identify trends that could impact organizational objectives and/or operational resources. In collaboration with the internal Legal department interpret appropriate laws and policies and advise management and employees accordingly.
  • Respond intelligently, collaboratively, and in accordance with regulatory guidelines for workplace practices, while being mindful of the Company’s cultural values regarding these issues.
  • Participate on committee that is reviewing/selecting new Global HRIS solution and proactively plan on how to scale usage with the growth of the company.
  • Travel to market locations where and when necessary or required.
  • And, of course, other duties as assigned.


  • 10+ years of experience leading HR in a multi-national, preferable global, ideally with in a fast scaling organization.
  • 4 year university degree or equivalent.
  • M&A, due diligence and integration experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of multiple HR disciplines including: compensation, recruitment, employee relations, diversity, performance management, benefit programs, and employment law.
  • Strong coaching, communication and influencing skill.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels; confidence in partnering with senior business leaders and coaching for success.
  • Known as a genuine collaborator and team-player – an inclusive mindset and ability to build great relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Completion of CHRM/CHRL designation or equivalent preferred.
  • Commercial Real Estate experience preferred.
