I am pleased to be serving as your 2021 President, alongside a tremendous group of professionals on the Toronto NAIOP Board. As our industry continues to navigate the challenges related to COVID-19, your Board has been hard at work creating programming and advocating for our industry, to support our NAIOP membership. While we are hopeful that we will soon be able to return to in-person programming, in the interim, we have a great slate of virtual programs, professional development and mentorship opportunities to help you through these challenging times and prepare for a return to normalcy.

Programs – Our 2021 Economic and Real Estate Market Outlook is an event not to be missed.  On February 5th, join Michael Turner, Peter Senst and Carl Gomez to get the inside track on what you need to know going into 2021 from an economic and real estate perspective. Register today!

Education – Our CREST curriculum is being offered to members at a discount, with courses including: Leasing, Development Finance, Investments, Legal, Argus Training by Altus and Advanced Financial Modelling by Marquee. New to the education offering is the Leadership curriculum, offering a host of professional development opportunities. Click here to learn more about the courses offered.

Developing Leaders – Developing Leaders can look forward to a robust mentorship program, with over 130 mentors volunteering their time to mentor Developing Leaders. Our Developing Leaders committee is also in full swing preparing for the 2021 Development Challenge that will highlight a site with real world complexities. Stay tuned for exciting updates on our website.

Bubbles – NAIOP Bubbles is a new program that was piloted in 2020 to bring together small groups of NAIOP members to network, share market intelligence and best practices. These smaller groups will also be able to meet in person once government restrictions are relaxed. We have received tremendous feedback on the Bubbles program and have opened up more spaces for those interested in participating! Government Relations – NAIOP’s Government Relations efforts have led to successes on several fronts: Toronto continuing to exempt commercial properties from Development Charges; a uniform Business Education Tax rate across Ontario that meant 94% of all business properties saw a reduction in taxes; non-residential properties being exempted from paying Community Benefit Charges; and the Ontario Ministry of Finance launching a formal review of taxation and assessment issues in Ontario based on our recommendations. Lastly, and most importantly, I would like to thank our sponsors for their continued support in 2021. Without them, the work we do at NAIOP to support our industry would not be possible.

I look forward to the year ahead which holds promise for a return to normalcy, growth and prosperity for our industry.

Best Regards,

Nurit Altman
2021 Greater Toronto Area NAIOP President
